The Complete Moving Checklist

8 weeks before your move

• Set your moving date — If you're selling, coordinate with your closing date. Cash home buyers can often work around your preferred timeline.
• Research moving companies — Get at least three quotes. Check reviews and verify they're licensed and insured.
• Create a moving budget — Factor in movers, packing supplies, travel, temporary housing, and deposits for your new place.
• Start decluttering — Go room by room. Donate, sell, or discard items you don't need. Less stuff means lower moving costs.

6 weeks before your move

• Book your moving company — Or reserve a rental truck if doing it yourself. Peak season (summer) fills up fast.
• Start collecting packing supplies — Boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, and packing paper. Check local stores for free boxes.
• Begin packing non-essentials — Seasonal items, books, decor, and anything you won't need in the next six weeks.
• Notify important parties — Your employer, kids' schools, doctors, dentist, and veterinarian.

4 weeks before your move

• Forward your mail — Set up mail forwarding with USPS (you can do this online at usps.com).
• Transfer or set up utilities — Schedule disconnection at your current home and activation at your new one. Include electric, gas, water, internet, and trash.
• Update your address — Banks, insurance, subscriptions, credit cards, DMV, voter registration, and the IRS.
• Pack room by room — Label every box with its contents and destination room. Keep an inventory list.

2 weeks before your move

• Confirm with your movers — Verify date, time, address, and any special instructions (stairs, narrow doorways, heavy items).
• Pack an essentials box — Toiletries, medications, phone chargers, a change of clothes, snacks, important documents, and basic tools. This stays with you.
• Clean as you pack — Clean each room as it's emptied. This saves you from a marathon cleaning session later.
• Take photos — Document the condition of your current home (especially if renting) and photograph serial numbers on electronics.

Moving day

• Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet
• Check all lights, faucets, and appliances are off
• Lock all doors and windows
• Hand over keys to the new owner or your real estate contact
• Supervise loading and check items off your inventory
• Keep your essentials box, valuables, and important documents with you — not on the truck

After you move in

• Verify all utilities are working at your new home
• Update your driver's license and vehicle registration (if you moved to a new state)
• Register to vote at your new address
• Find new doctors, dentists, and other service providers
• Change the locks and test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors
